Human papilloma virus
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of viruses that infect the skin and mucous membranes of humans. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide. There are over 100 types of HPV, and while some types can cause genital warts or lead to cervical, genital and other cancers, many HPV infections do not cause any symptoms and are cleared by the immune system without causing harm.
Spread of HPV
Sexual Contact: HPV is primarily spread through direct skin-to-skin contact, most commonly during physical or oral contact. It can be transmitted even when there are no visible signs or symptoms.
Genital-to-Genital Contact: The virus can be transmitted through contact with the genital area or surrounding skin.
Vertical Transmission: HPV can also be transmitted from mother to baby during childbirth, although this is less common.
