Mycoplasma genitalium

One form of bacteria that can infect the urinary tract and genitalia is called Mycoplasma genitalium, and it usually spreads during intercourse. It falls under the category of STIs, or sexually transmitted infections. Mycoplasma genitalium infections can result in symptoms such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), cervicitis, or urethritis in women, and urethritis, or inflammation of the urethra, in males.

Symptoms

Mycoplasma genitalium infection can often be asymptomatic, meaning individuals may not experience any noticeable symptoms.

When symptoms do occur, they can include:
• Pain or burning sensation during urination
• Unusual discharge from the genital area
• Pain during sexual intercourse
• Pelvic pain (in women)

Transmission of Mycoplasma:

• Mycoplasma genitalium is transmitted through intimate sexual contact with an infected person.
• It can infect the urethra in men and the cervix in women, as well as the throat and rectum in both genders.
